Patrons go to Maryland restaurants for a variety of reasons, including the food, the atmosphere and the service. And while most people enjoy dining out, they recognize that it does have a few risks. Food or beverages may have fallen to the floor, creating a risk of a slip and fall accident. Or the food may be undercooked. But getting hit by a car while sitting in a restaurant is generally not among the risks we think of when we sit down to eat a meal.
Yet that is precisely what happened at a Maryland Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant yesterday. Customers were enjoying their dinner when a car barreled through the front of the KFC, crashing into a number of people inside. Four people sustained injures while another was killed. Witnesses to the wrongful death accident believe that the vehicle was traveling close to 100 miles per hour immediately prior to the accident.
Witnesses further reported that the driver lost control of the car at that excessive speed and struck a curb, launching the vehicle into the restaurant like a missile. The twisted metal frame of the car that lay inside the KFC demonstrated the violence of the crash. There is no information yet concerning why the driver of the car was traveling at such a high rate of speed.
Although the four injured patrons' injuries were not believed to be substantial, even minor injuries can lead to significant medical bills for treatment and rehabilitative care. To make matters worse, they may be unable to work for a period of time due to the injuries. Those who are injured or killed as the result of a driver's negligence have the right to seek compensation.
